Microfilariae in dogs – Baby Heartworms

more information:http://worms.buydogfleamedicine.com

This is a video of a baby heartworm traveling through the blood smear of a dog that was seen at Firehouse Animal Health Center

These microscopic baby worms called microfilaria circulate in the bloodstream. When a mosquito bites and takes a blood meal from an infected animal, it picks up these baby worms, which develop and mature into “infective stage” larvae over a period of 10 to 14 days. Then, when the infected mosquito bites another dog, cat, or susceptible wild animal, the baby heartworms enter the new host through the mosquito’s bite wound. Once inside a new host, it takes approximately 6 months for the babies to mature into adult heartworms. Once mature, heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs and up to 2 or 3 years in cats. Because of the longevity of these worms, each mosquito season can lead to an increasing number of worms in an infected pet.

How can my dog still test positive for heartworms even after taking a preventative heartworm tablet?

more information:http://worms.buydogfleamedicine.com

Positive test results don’t necessarily mean that heartworm treatments aren’t working. Dr. Jeff Werber (“Fox & Friends,” “Dr. Oz”) explains many of the reasons why. To learn more about heartworm disease, visit http://www.trifexis.com/about-parasites/about-heartworms/default.aspx.

Ask your veterinarian about Trifexis® (spinosad + milbemycin oxime), the 3-in-1 combination tablet that kills fleas and prevents infestations, prevents heartworm disease, and treats and controls hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
See the full product label for complete safety information at http://www.elanco.us/labels/Companion-Animals/Trifexis.pdf.

Serious adverse reactions have been reported following concomitant extra-label use of ivermectin with spinosad, one of the components of Trifexis.

Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Trifexis, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection.

Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. The most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, depression, itching and decreased appetite.

To ensure heartworm prevention, observe your dog for one hour after administration. If vomiting occurs within an hour of administration, redose.

Green Chemistry
The introduction of spinosad for use in agriculture resulted in the receipt of a Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 1999 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The award was presented to Dow Agro Sciences LLC in the category of Designing Safer Chemicals for the introduction of spinosad as an insect control product for use on crops. This award demonstrates that spinosad, as a technology for insect control, has a favorable environmental profile. This award is not relevant to the safety and efficacy of Trifexis, nor does it confer any environmental benefit to Trifexis.

Your veterinarian is your best source of advice about your dog’s healthcare.

Your dog should be tested for heartworm infection before starting Trifexis.

To minimize the likelihood of fleas continuing to jump onto your dog, it is important to treat all household pets with an approved flea protection product.

If a dose is missed and a monthly interval between doses is exceeded, then immediately give Trifexis with food and resume monthly dosing. This will minimize the opportunity for heartworm infection. Also, continuing normal monthly dosing will allow you to gain control of any flea infestation or intestinal parasite infection that might have affected your dog. Trifexis should be administered at monthly intervals beginning within 1 month of the dog’s first seasonal exposure and continuing until at least 3 months after the dog’s last exposure to mosquitoes.

Trifexis is not for use in humans. Like all medications, keep Trifexis out of reach of children.

Heartworms in Dogs

more information:http://worms.buydogfleamedicine.com

http://tvet.com Heartworms are a very common parasite affecting our dogs, in fact in many parts of the country the disease has reached endemic proportions. The disease itself, if left undetected and untreated can often be fatal, and the sad truth is that screening and prevention is so easy and inexpensive. The disease is caused by a worm which migrates to and invades the heart and the vessels around the heart and lungs. The parasite is introduced into the dog’s bloodstream via the bite of an infected mosquito which injects the infant form of the heartworm, called microfilaria. It is because of this mosquito transmission that the disease is so prevalent in parts of the world where mosquitoes are such a problem.
